flower eco-breakdown
Landfill diversion guides much of District 2 Floral Studio's design practice — from how flora is sourced, to design mechanics, to composting excess organic matter (flowers).
We also offer post-event flower “eco-breakdowns” for large *events such as weddings, corporate gatherings and nonprofit fundraisers, inspired by the Garbage Goddess model.
An “eco-breakdown” involves disassembling the flowers after your event, then separating them into categories:
Each category is then taken to its appropriate receptacle location, returned for reuse and/or passed on to a donation partner.

An “eco-breakdown” involves disassembling the flowers after your event, then separating them into categories:
- COMPOST: Organic matter like flowers, foliage (free of bleach, dye, glitter or paint)
- REUSABLE: Wire, vessels, hurricanes, fabric, rubberbands, discarded vases
- RECYCLABLE: Cardboard, paper packaging, plastic bottles
- ENERGY "ORANGE" BAG: Hard-to-recycle soft plastics like plastic bags, tape, zip ties
- LANDFILL: Single-use plastics like **floral foam, painted flora
Each category is then taken to its appropriate receptacle location, returned for reuse and/or passed on to a donation partner.
We are part of Hillside Solutions’ Compost Club, which offers a commercial compost drop-site for large hauls, much like the one shown above of a bountiful wedding flower pergola installation that was disassembled post-event, then composted, diverting 30+ pounds of organic matter from our local landfill!
This is relevant because organic matter, like flower and food waste, that end up in the landfill instead of an appropriate compost site, generate more methane, a heat-trapping greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide. In short, composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions. During a time of climate change concerns on the impact on the health and well-being of people and planet, this is a tangible act we can do in our efforts of offering a sustainable approach to floral design.
Reach out if you have an upcoming event in need of a flower “eco-breakdown” for low-waste event planning!
NOTES:
*District 2 Floral Studio does NOT need to be your hired event florist to be hired to complete a flower “eco-breakdown” for an event. We offer this service both in addition to being your hired event florist, OR as a contract team member for post-event flower “eco-breakdown” service.
**Is floral foam used in your event? Foam does not biodegrade and is carcinogenic so we implement an environmental fee to cover handling and proper disposal for events that utilize it.
